It is with immense sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved Tom on November 24, 2025. Tom passed into the hands of his father, a man he greatly admired, in a beautiful moment etched forever in time by the dignity and grace of a solitary bagpiper as its majestic and stirring melody marked Tom’s Scottish roots and delivered a final honour and blessing.
Tom left this world as he came into it, surrounded by love and comfort of his loving family members. We will deeply miss your common sense wisdom and one-of-a-kind wit, especially as we traded good natured jabs and barbs at family times. No one will ever forget your uncanny ability to settle any debate and claim swift victory with your trademark phrase “The Duck Knows”.
Tom was the eldest, and perhaps at some times, unfortunate leader of four siblings, a collection of misfits that he undoubtedly experienced were not easily led. He stood in front when the moment summoned leadership and guidance and he stood behind when the moment said dad knows what you did; don’t come home yet. Tom put his little brothers and sister on pedestals, and his pride was always on full display when he shared their latest achievements and successes with friends and others. One great honour of our lives was to know you and call you big brother.
Born and raised in Hamilton, Tom carried on the Millar tradition set by his father and grandfather of a strong work ethic, loyalty and commitment. They did in work as they did in life. Tom enjoyed a 40-year career with Dofasco, and later the renamed Arcelor Mittal, as he progressed through various roles over his time.
Every day was game day somewhere for Tom. He enjoyed his own man cave or gathering with friends and fans to take in all types of sports events, and a few dollars wagered on sporting outcomes always helped to spice up the entertainment and camaraderie. Game day took on even greater importance as he led the cheers for the Oregon Ducks, his favourite football team.
Tom is survived by Deborah Marshall, his partner of 35 years, his children, mother Diane, brothers Jim, Mike and Dan, sister Shelley and their spouses and partners, along with many nieces, nephews and their spouses and many great-nephews and great-nieces.
Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Tom’s life, as he wished, will be held at a future date. God bless you partner, son, brother and friend as your next journey begins. You’ll always have a seat here with us on game day. Lang mae yer lum reek.
