Alice Jean Anthony, 79, was called to her heavenly home on Saturday, August 29, 2020 in Hampton, Virginia after a valiant battle with congestive heart failure. Her devotion to her family and her firm belief in God supported her in the struggle and ultimately gave her peace. Alice was surrounded by her beloved family during her last days.
Alice was born August 8, 1941 in Enfield, North Carolina, to Rosella Smith and Otis Alston. She did not have a traditional education but, that didn’t stop her from making the best out of what she had, providing for her family and being an example to her children.
Alice worked hard to provide for her family working multiple jobs at times. She was persistent, dedicated and had an impeccable work ethic. Alice was offered a job in the Food Services Department at Riverside Regional Medical Center where she was a faithful employee for over 30 years. Alice enjoyed what she did. She had a servant’s heart, loved being around people, and would give you her last if asked. Alice brightened everyone’s day with her beautiful infectious smile. When Alice retired in 2003, she spent her days traveling with family, crocheting, taking various classes and eating at her favorite restaurants during special occasions.
Alice truly lived life to the fullest through simple pleasures such as chatting with friends and family and spending time with her children. Alice loved the Lord with all her heart and let her faith guide her in any decisions she made in life. She was a long-standing member of 40 years at Calvary Community Baptist Church in Newport News, Virginia and was affectionately known by her church family as Mother Alice.
Alice accepted people regardless of their differences and flaws, was a natural comforter, and had an amazing sense of humor. She always made sure she provided a safe, happy and worry-free environment for everyone she encountered. Alice was a selfless mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, who had the courage to move to Virginia alone so she could provide a better life for her children. Her selfless act was a defining moment for her and she aspired to be the best mother she could be. Not only was she the greatest mother, grandmother and great-grandmother; she also became an inspiration to any and everyone who had the privilege of being in her presence. She was truly loved by all and will be missed by all.
Alice is survived by her daughters: Geneva Carter (Howard), Tanisha Anthony, of Hampton VA and Mary Hackney (William) of Annapolis MD, her son Marcus Anthony (Kisha) of Hampton VA, sisters: Betty Parker of Scotland Neck, NC, Hellen McDaniels of East Orange NJ, Dorothy Copeland of Edison NJ, Brenda Alexander (Herman), Barbara Threatt (Benjamin) of Chester, VA, Florine Warren, Floridean Williams and Mary Williams of Richmond, VA, Gwendolyn Nicholson (Robert) of Upper Marlboro MD, brothers: Obryant Alston, Glenn Whitaker of Enfield, NC, John Evans (Carolyn) of Whitakers, NC, grandchildren: Shalonda, Nichelle, Adrian (Andrea) and Ryan Hackney, Shameena (Shay) Skinner, Hasani Mosi, Antwon, Steven and Alicia Carter, six great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren and a host of very loving nephews, nieces, cousins and special friends.
The Lord has been faithful and gracious unto her, and has transitioned her to her heavenly home. “Give God the Praise”
God looked around His garden and found an empty place; He then looked down on earth and saw your tired face. He put His arms around you and lifted you to rest; God’s garden must be beautiful, He always takes the best. He saw the road was getting rough and the hills hard to climb, so He closed your weary eyelids and whispered, “Peace Be Thine”. It broke our hearts to see you go, but you didn’t go alone, for part of us went with you the day God called you home. ~ Your Loving Family
