

She was a dedicated educator, recognized in Who’s Who in American Education and multiple collegiate Honor Societies. A Professor of Sociology and part of the founding faculty at Thomas Nelson Community College, she worked on the Accreditation Committee and taught for over 25 years. Through her life she was active in many charities and organizations, including the YWCA, the Hampton Chamber of Commerce, Peninsula United Way, Special Olympics, and Meals on Wheels.
A loving Mother, Grandmother, and Great-Grandmother, our beloved “Gram” is survived and mourned by three daughters, Sheryl Ann McLaughlin (husband William), Terri Lynn Coon, and Karie Kaye Wright; six grand-children, William C. McLaughlin, Courtney Jean McLaughlin, Joseph Walton IV, Austin Coon, Nicole Wright, and Casey Wright; and three great grand-children, Joseph Walton V, Lily Walton, and Noah Walton.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Loy and Lanelta Knight, and a daughter, Karen, who died at birth.
The family will celebrate her life in a private ceremony.
