Carmen Dina Lugent (Tanca) was born in Ururi, Italy, on July 17, 1939. She was raised in Ururi and met her husband, “Dick,” when he traveled to Italy during his first tour with the U.S. Army in Germany. They married in Italy in 1957 and returned to Germany. They traveled the world with the U.S. Army before settling down in Hampton, Virginia. In over 66 years of marriage, they raised seven children and built a large and proud Italian family.
Carmen was a loving and devoted wife, mother, sister, and daughter. She fiercely protected her loved ones and always supported her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Watching her and her sister, Clara, talk in Italian and laugh hysterically was a sight to behold! Whether sipping espresso or “discussing” who found the best deals, they spent time together every single day. Carmen also loved visits from her local Italian village of friends and had many relatives in her hometown of Ururi that she loved to stay in touch with.
Carmen is survived by her seven children: Rose, Mary, Richard Jr. (Libby), Joseph (Susan), Carmen (Paul), Cindy (Scott), and Randy (Lisa); 11 grandchildren: Renn, Devin, Joseph, Brendan, Cariana, Amanda, Matthew, Bryce, Hannah, Corinne, and Tyler; eight great-grandchildren: Rory, Vada, Halen, Cade, Wyatt, Caroline, Dean, and Everly; and her loving sister Clara and brother-in-law Henry, and their daughters, Carla and Lisa.
Carmen is the family matriarch who, along with our father, created a big, loving, loyal, and dedicated family. Holidays were always “organized” chaos, and we wouldn’t have it any other way! She was the best Italian cook and could make anything taste delicious (although she did not follow any recipe and could not tell you how she made something…her sauce still cannot be duplicated). You never left her house hungry and always left with more than you came with.
