

Born October 18, 1948, in Spring Hope, North Carolina, and raised in Hampton, he proudly served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, earning the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He later battled long-term effects of Agent Orange with strength and resilience.
Charles married Edna Mae Richards in 1968, and together they built a loving family. He is survived by his wife, daughters Mary (Tony) and Diana (Vern), grandchildren, Rickey Watkins, Amber Woodard and Brittany Woodard (Richard), great-grandson Charles Oakley, brothers Clyde Earl (Becky), and Neal (Audra), and many other relatives and friends. He is also survived by his faithful companion, Sassy Mae.
He worked in the shipyard for 44 years, where he formed lasting friendships and earned the respect of those who knew him. He was also a father figure and mentor to many.
Charles enjoyed NASCAR, especially Dale Earnhardt, hunting, and was a devoted Dallas Cowboys fan.
He will be remembered for his service, strength, and deep love for his family. His legacy lives on through them. He will be dearly missed.
The family will receive friends for a Visitation that will be held at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home & Memorial Park, Chapel, 2551 North Armistead Ave, Hampton, Virginia 23666, on April 3, 2026, from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm. A Celebration of Life will take place at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home & Memorial Park, Chapel, 2551 North Armistead Ave, Hampton, Virginia 23666, on April 3, 2026, at 2:00 pm.
Interment to Follow the Service with Military Honors will be at Hampton Memorial Gardens, 155 Butler Farm Road, Hampton, Virginia 23666, on April 3, 2026, at 3:00 pm. A Reception will follow at the Gloucester DAV, Chapter 58 post, located at 6265 Professional Dr. in Gloucester, VA. 23061.
