

Mr. Frank H. Wheless passed away peacefully on Friday, November 11, 2016, after a brief illness. He was born in Florence County, South Carolina, on May 25, 1933. Frank graduated in 1952 from Timmonsville High School; he then attended Clemson University where he earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering. After graduating from Clemson in 1958, he moved to the Peninsula beginning a career with Newport News Shipbuilding that spanned 35 years. He served the community for 55 years as a charter member of the Northampton Lions Club, and was honored with the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award for his commitment to helping others. His church home was Hidenwood Presbyterian Church.
Frank is survived by daughters M. Paige Maddox, Amy W. Stepp, and Mary Kip Bradley; and son-in-law B. Mark Stepp. His surviving grandchildren include James W. Maddox III, Amber S. Maddox, Nicole M. Stepp, and B. Alex Stepp. He is survived by one brother, Albert E. Wheless.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Phyllis M. Wheless; parents, Arthur B. and Marie M. Wheless; two brothers, Arthur B. Wheless and James Wheless; four sisters, Sadie Wheless, Catherine Herlehy, Virginia Shea, and Margaret Leslie; son-in-law, Dalton L. Bradley; and former son-in-law, James W. Maddox, Jr.
A visitation will be held on Friday, November 18, from 6:00–8:00 p.m. at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home in Hampton. Funeral services, officiated by Reverend William G. Lamont, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 19, at Hidenwood Presbyterian Church in Newport News, followed by a brief reception. Burial will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park in Hampton.
