GT was preceded in rest by his wife of 69 years, Betty Turner Ford, three sisters, and two brothers. He is survived by his son, Glenn Ford and his wife, Cindy; and daughter, Trina Murray and her husband, John. He was a loving PaPa of grandchildren, Nick Murray and wife, Tracy, Laura Hunter Ford Kirk and husband, Aaron, and Garrett Ford; and great-grandchildren, Jonathan Melton, Charles Murray, Dylan Murray, and Ezra Kirk.
He was a faithful member of Bethany United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the Smith Sunday School Class, Happy Hearts, and the properties team.
GT was a devoted husband, father, and PaPa. He was a knowledgeable and trusted mechanic. He loved gardening vegetables and flowers and sharing them with others. He was famous for his collard greens, especially at holiday meals and for his crispy grilled cheese sandwiches. He rode his bicycle daily until 89 years old, putting thousands of miles on it. He was a big NASCAR fan, his favorite drivers always driving Fords.
GT was proud of his service during WWII in the Pacific aboard the USS Wisconsin, BB64. He was a Plank Owner, being a member of the original crew of the mighty ship. He was truly a member of the Greatest Generation.
After WWII, GT worked at Superior Motors Lincoln and Mercury in Hampton. He attended evening courses and became a Certified Lincoln-Mercury Technician. He then worked for and retired from Sears, Roebuck and Company.
The family will receive friends 1:00 to 2:00 pm, Tuesday, March 27, 2018 at Bethany United Methodist Church. A celebration of GT’s life will be held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, March 27 at the church. Interment with military honors provided by the U.S. Navy Honor Guard will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park
Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to Bethany United Methodist Church for Mission Projects.
