

Helen Carroll Foster, 94, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend passed away peacefully at home March 24 in Hampton, VA. She was born in Lynchburg, VA, on December 25, 1922, to George Andrew and Lillian Mann Carroll. She graduated from E. C. Glass High School in 1941.
In 1944 she married William Johnson Foster. As a military wife she lived in Lexington, VA; Taiwan; Fort Meade, MD; Okinawa; and Fort Monroe, VA before settling in Hampton after her husband’s retirement. For many years she worked as a retail clerk, most recently at Leggett’s Department Store, formerly in downtown Hampton.
She had many devoted friends and neighbors and was an active member of Ivy Memorial Baptist Church, where she taught Children’s Church and Sunday School.
She is survived by her two daughters, Judy Carroll Foster (Susan Becker) and Nan Foster Meadows; four grandchildren, David Meadows (Jennifer), Rachel Meadows Farrow (Chris), Sarah Parham Lichty (Todd), and Maggie Parham Cichosz (Tim); thirteen great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents, husband, two brothers and two sisters.
Visitation will be at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, March 28. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 29, at Ivy Memorial Baptist Church. Burial will be next to her husband at Parklawn Memorial Park.
