Hilda Gwaltney Ballew

Hilda G. Ballew, 84, of Hampton, passed away on Thursday, March 16, 2017 at her home after a battle with cancer. Born May 2, 1932, to the late N.O. and Louise Gwaltney, Hilda was a lifelong resident of Hampton. She was devoted and loving to her family and friends. Her wonderful smile, loving and gentle nature, and kindness will live on in those who love her.

Hilda was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, George and daughter, Debra Murphy. She is survived by her daughter, Darlene Murphy and her husband Gerald, of Gloucester; son, James Robert Ballew of Hampton; brother, William Gwaltney and his wife Glenda, of Chattanooga, Tennessee; sister, Susie Wright and her husband Robert, of Wichita Falls, Texas; two grandchildren, Jamie Falls and her husband William, of Richlands, North Carolina and Jason Murphy of Newport News; two great-granddaughters, Madeline and Allison Falls of North Carolina; and a host of other family members.

The family would like to thank Sentara Hospice for the care of their mother.

Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Hilda to the American Cancer Society.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 pm on Monday, March 20, 2017 at Parklawn Memorial Park.
