He was born August 3, 1938 in North Carolina and moved to Virginia in early childhood. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford Eli Hammer and Della Mae (nee Owens) Hammer. He is survived by his children, James C. Hammer II (Tiffany), and Jarrod C. Hammer (Nicole); his brother, Charles Hammer (Sharon); and his sister, Diane Tingen (Bruce). He delighted in the lives of his grandchildren: Caleb, Jamie, Heather, Cayla, Kaylee, Connor, and his newest, Sophie.
JC, as he was affectionately known, graduated from Hampton High School in 1956. He worked as a fitter and welder for several businesses, later becoming a long-haul trucker so he could see the world and enjoy life. JC enjoyed playing his sax in the church band at Parkview Church of God, and he could also be found playing and entertaining at the Moose Lodge. Upon retirement from the trucking business, he met Miss Betty, who was by his side for many years until her passing in 2020. They traveled when they could, but took great pleasure in spending time with friends and family. JC would do anything for anyone and loved to come to the rescue, whether it was hauling anything in his truck or driving his grandkids around when needed. JC was a great father, a fun and caring, yet sarcastic and teasing, papaw who will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
There will be a private graveside service at Parklawn Memorial Park, Hampton, Virginia. Arrangements are under the care of Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home, 2551 N. Armistead Ave., Hampton, Va 23666.
