

Born May 6, 1924, Katie Caton Congleton Scott, beloved mother and Nana Katie to her 8 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren, passed away peacefully on Wednesday October 29, 2014 at the age of 90. She was born to the late William C. and Eula M. Congleton in Hampton, VA. She was married to the love of her life, Donald E. “Scotty” Scott, for 55 years.
Katie is survived by her daughters, Bonnie S. Hopper (James) of St. Augustine, FL, and Pamela Strahorn Joyner (Michael) of Yorktown, VA; grandchildren, Chris, Howard, Katie, Stephanie, Suzanne, Jennifer, David, and Mark; and great-grandchildren, Hayden, Garrett, Jackson, Scotty, Kailyn, Casey, and Hunter.
Katie and Scotty enjoyed their beach house at Buckroe and later moved to Winward Towers in Newport News. Years after Scotty’s passing, Katie enjoyed living with her daughters. She started her Christian journey as an Episcopalian where she enjoyed serving in the soup kitchen. She later converted to Catholicism and continued her compassionate work at Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Newport News. Katie was a proprietor of the Cat’s Meow, a children’s clothing store, in Downtown Hampton. Katie would often say, “I am a good person” and she was.
The family will receive visitors from 12:30 to 2:00 pm on Saturday, November 1, 2014 at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home with the funeral service at 2:00 pm. Interment will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park. Katie requested that Isaiah 43:1-4 be read at her funeral.
