Macie, a retiree from Hampton City Schools, is preceded in death by her husband, James Carlton Matthews, who also passed of Alzheimer’s disease. She is survived by her son Rev. Dr. Carl Matthews and husband Rev. Larry Davis, her daughters Teresa Martin and husband Richard, and Vanessa King and husband Bruce. Macie is also survived by 7 grandchildren (Heather Bonham, Niki Jaquay, James King, Jamie Graham, Carlos Davis, Alicia Davis, Isaiah Davis) and 4 great-grandchildren (AJ Bonham, Kaylee Bonham, Adison Graham, and Wyatt Graham).
To her family, she was a devoted mother and loving grandmother. To her friends, she was a strong woman who was full of wisdom. Macie was also “Grandma” to many outside of the family, including those around her neighborhood who were also dearly loved by her.
Being the family-oriented woman that she was, the family has chosen to honor her wishes with a private family ceremony. The family would like to thank everyone who has graciously shown love and support during this difficult time.
In lieu of flowers, first and foremost pray for a cure for the deadly Alzheimer’s disease. Secondly, please consider giving a monetary donation to the Alzheimer’s Association Southeastern Virginia Chapter towards finding a cure by visiting www.alz.org/seva.
“I am confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.” -2 Corinthians 5:8 KJV
