My husband and I were very saddened to hear that Malcolm passed away.  I lived next door to your family on Bancroft Drive in Hampton when Heather was born.  My husband is a retired firefighter who respected your dad very much.  Malcolm was one of the happiest people we have ever met.  We hope your faith will help you during this difficult time.

Hello JW, Francis Mae, and Lyndell, what a wonderful young brother you had in Malcolm.  His nature never changed.  He was kind, loving, fun, hard working, honest, caring and more.  His service today was a great tribute to God and to what God can do through people like Malcolm, who give their life to Him and honor Him in their daily living. I was blessed to be able to attend.  Lyndell, I recognized you right off-which surprised me. You and my sister nancy, were like kin growing up together.  Y'all could get into some interesting situations together!  She would have been with me today, but she suffered a stroke about two months ago and is in rehab relearning skills.  She is very content and her mind seems sharp.  She really wants to get in touch with you.  Her home number is 757-566-8721.  When you are settled and have time I know she would love to hear from you.  My brother, Tommy, has health issues also.  Thankfully, I am blessed with good health and I was blessed today to be able to attend Malcolm's service. My husband and I often ran into Malcolm, he was always just the same - happy, humble, and glad to see us.  May God bless you all richly. Malcolm,
Was a special individual.  Over the years I watch Malcom grow into the fine person he became.  I new him as a great firefighter/ Battalion Chief, a born again christian who love the lord, a great husband to his wife and children.  I started my career in the fire service working at Wythe Fire Station with Malcolm. We had some very exciting and funny  times together over the years but I will remember him as the fine husband that took care of his wife when she became ill and a christian.  He will be missed.

I am so sorry to hear that your Dad passed away this week.  Even more surprised to learn that your Mother died so recently as well.  As it happens at times, your parents were very present in my thoughts over the last month or so and I had wondered how they were.  I have wonderful memories of get-togethers with them.  They were both loving and caring people and will be missed.

Malcolm was one of the best firefighters, all the way up the ranks of Battalion Chief! He was a great teacher for anyone who would ask or not and one of the best mentors that I ever had the pleasure of working with! He was always fun at EMT RECERT TIME!


Not only was he a great "GO TO" man in the department, but he also a great friend. He was there for me when I lost my sister and my dad. He always had an ear for me when I needed one!

I will never forget the various lessons you taught me and will miss you, but I also know that we will meet again one day! Thank you Malcolm!

I had the pleasure of meeting Malcolm at Northampton Community Center's Fitness center over 5 years ago.  He was always smiling and friendly to everyone.  He touched many lives there and will be surely missed by all!

Malcolm and I have been friends since the second grade of elementary school. I have been loved by his family and his family has been loved by mine. Malcolm lived out his faith and was an example of the authentic man of God that Malcolm and I, as well as other men in our church, studied to be. I am one of many that counted Malcolm as a Christian saint as he showed us what it means to love your wife as Christ loves the church. Malcolm was a giver. No one mentioned that they needed something without Malcolm finding a way to provide it. The word friend is way too small to define my relationship with Malcolm. He gave me, as well, as many others, a benchmark to show what a Christian man's life can be. Thanks, God, for letting Malcolm be part of my life.

I met Malcolm 21 yrs ago at the Tuesday morning mens BIble study. He was the most faithful member and was always there if he could be. I learned so much from him and admired his strong Faith. His dedication to his Wife Phyllis during her illness was the clearest picture of the love that Jesus Christ has for us that I can imagine. To watch him fall in love with her more and more as her illness progressed allowed me to see how a man should love and cherish his spouse. Malcolm was a fine man and a great friend and the World will be less without him.

Mr. Garris sister Lyndell has been one of my moms ( Donna Haulsee ) best friends for years and because of that close relationship she has also became a part of our family. We wish for her and the Garris family peace and comfort and to know that they are all in our thoughts and prayers.

Malcolm and Phyllis were great friends of the family .  We shared many happy times together.  They will always hold a special place in our hearts.  Thoughts and prayers for the entire family.

Malcom was a good friend to everyone he met. He would always offer to help with any project his friends were doing. We camped together with other
outdoor friends including his son in law Kevin. He will be greatly missed by all of us. Our prayers are with the family at this time of grief.

Malcolm was a childhood friend.  We lived one street over from each other in the Wythe area of Hampton.  We were able to reconnect several times over the years and I remember his fondest dream was to become a firefighter.  I am so glad he was able to make that dream come true.  He was a credit to the Hampton Fire Department and to his profession.  Malcolm was dedicated to his family, friends and community.  He was a man of faith and lived his life as a Christian example.  I know when the Lord received him home He said, "Well done thou good and faithful servant.". My thoughts and prayers are with the family.  He will be greatly missed by many.  Brenda Barlow Quillin.

Malcolm always came by and spoke when he took his car in for service.  He was a very kind family man, and I will miss his visits.  My prayers and condolences to his family.

Malcolm was a good neighbor and helped folks whenever he saw a need. Last winter, early in the morning, I heard him shoveling my sidewalk. Recently he edged my lawn because I just had surgery. He was thoughtful, helpful, and so physically fit that his death is a shock to everyone. I will miss him and I know that heaven welcomed him home. God bless and keep his family as they deal with his death.

Malcolm was my cousin, only one month older than myself(I never had a brother)I remember him answering the phone "Joe's Pool Hall"..."Eight Ball speaking" & him thinking that was so funny, and me thinking that was so immature! (But we were 10 years old, then)...With maturity came respect &love for your children, your sisters, your mother your brother& your community;I'll miss you brother. Malcolm will be missed. I'm so glad I got to talk to him over the summer, but sad I didn't get to take him out kayaking as he wanted to give it a try. A lot of fond memories of the times we all worked together getting supplies for the horses over the years. My condolences, he was taken too soon.

Malcolm  was a true Christian friend to my husband Steve.  He introduced him to a book about PTS from Vietnam to help Steve heal as well as his family.  Malcolm understood the war that rages on inside Vietnam veterans.  Heaven gained a true follower of Christ, and he is now together with his beautiful wife.  God

Malcolm was like a second father to me. He was my host dad when I played for the Pilots.  I am still in shock and am praying for his family during this time.  Malcolm would do anything for anybody anytime of the week.  Heaven gained a true American Hero!
