

Melvin Eugene Garman died on Sunday, March 18, 2012 at the VA Medical Center Hospice Unit in Hampton, Virginia. He was born to Boyd and Annie Garman in Catawba, Roanoke County, Virginia on November 16, 1930. He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was a Purple Heart recipient. He was a life-long member of the DAV Post Murray RHEA #6 of Hampton and VFW Post #176 of Newport News. He retired from General Electric Supply Company in 1990 after being with the company for 35 years in Roanoke and Hampton. He was then with S and S Sales, Inc. of Virginia Beach for over 20 years.
Melvin is preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Margaret; brothers, Fred, Mason and Howard Garman; and sisters, Pauline Sirrey and Stella Combs. He is survived by his sister, Florence Beckner; daughters, Anita L. Mosel of Austin, Texas, Mary Kathryn Ferrier and husband Glenn of Corapeake, Virginia, and Lisha Lee of Poquoson, Virginia; and sons, Thomas Edward Garman of Hampton, and Terrance Garman and wife Tia of Newport News. He is also survived by six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; and; and a host of nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm on Thursday, March 22, 2012, at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home. A celebration of Melvin's life will be held Friday, March 23, at 11:00 a.m., at Wesley United Methodist Church.
The family acknowledges and thanks the staff at the VA Medical Center Palliative Care Unit and the staff at Sentara Rehabilitation and Nursing Center for the wonderful care and concern shown during Melvin's illness.
At Mr. Garman's request, in lieu of flowers donations may be made to your favorite charity or organization.
