Roy Lee Giles, 88, of Hampton, Virginia, died peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, October 26, 2024. Born November 25, 1935, in Montvale, Virginia, to Corinne and Urbane Giles, Roy lived a life dedicated to hard work, service, and above all, family.
After graduating from Montvale High School, Roy began his career at the Newport News Shipyard Apprentice School as a machinist. During this time, he also enjoyed life in the fast lane as a racecar driver at Langley Speedway. Eventually his commitment to service led him to join the U.S. Marines, where he was stationed in Jacksonville, Florida. Upon returning to civilian life, Roy resumed his career at the Shipyard as a Material Inspector.
An entrepreneur at heart, Roy obtained his Real Estate Broker's License and established Roy Giles Realty, Inc. He operated the business successfully for five years before returning to the Shipyard, where he worked until retirement. Never one to remain idle, he then founded Roy's Lawncare Service, which he ran alongside his son Tim until just a few years ago.
Roy was a dedicated member of Pine Chapel Baptist Church for 35 years, where his faith guided his life. He loved being surrounded by his family, especially during their gatherings filled with food, games, and laughter. To know Roy was to love him. His loss leaves an immeasurable void in the lives of his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents, Urbane and Corinne Giles.
He leaves behind his beloved wife of 67 years, Betty Holland Giles. His legacy continues through his children: Melodie Blackburn and her husband Ronnie, and son Tim Giles. His cherished grandchildren include Cory Blackburn, Holly Blackburn, Faith Blackburn, Lee Green, and Tim Giles, Jr. He is also survived by his brother Richard Woodrow Giles and wife Dottie.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, November 2, 2024, from 12:30 to 1:30 PM at Pine Chapel Baptist Church, 1544 West Queen Street, Hampton, VA 23669. Funeral services will follow immediately, conducted by Pastor David Parker. Following the service, Roy will be placed in the Mausoleum at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home, 2551 N.
