Steve was born on February 4, 1958, in Pottsville, PA and grew up in Cressona, PA. He graduated from Blue Mountain High School in 1976, working at Koch’s Turkey Farm in Tamaqua, PA prior to joining the United States Army, enlisting on July 8, 1976. Upon finishing basic training and earning his Heavy Equipment AIT (Advanced Individual Training) Steve was stationed at Fort Leonardwood in Missouri, Fort Riley in Kansas, then on to Baumholder, Germany. He was even sent TDY on temporary assigned duty in Belgium and returned to Fort Riley in Kansas where he ultimately separated from service with an Honorable Discharge on March 30, 1984.
Steve then made Hampton, Virginia home until the time of his passing working for several construction firms such as Williams Construction, Branscom and then on to Calfee Contracting where he worked under Randy Snodgrass from November 2013 and continued until Randy (with Steve’s help) started Bridgeman Underground, Inc. in May of 2017. Randy and his wife, Bonnie, have shared their heartfelt accolades to how important Steve was in getting this new company off the ground. When they began, they were just a team of 11 employees and have since grown to now over 40. Randy stated ‘He is one of the best employees I have ever had. He trusted me and I (*darn) sure trusted him. He is and will be missed by this company from a business side of view but more importantly by me personally for his constant loyalty.’ Upon learning of Steve’s failing health in ICU, Randy’s wife Bonnie, in a plea for prayers for Steve and his family, shared on social media ‘We love you Steve, thank you for sharing your amazing work ethic, you mentored my boys and you devoted yourself to Bridgeman Underground. Randy appreciated everything that you did for him. Even though at times you were grumpy, sarcastic and a bit crazy, you loved to get us going, but we got you, and our world was a better place with you in it.’ These personal testimonies perfectly sum up the impact Steve had on their family, and the lives of all who knew him.
In his younger years, Steve enjoyed hunting in the mountains of his home state of Pennsylvania and he also loved fishing. An enthusiast of NASCAR, he followed the sport until the retirement of his favorite driver, Tony Stewart, two years ago. Although there wasn’t currently a fur baby in his life when he left us, we all know his great love for his dogs – Rusty, Johnson and Max. Steve was a loving son and brother, hardworking man, a wonderful husband and a devoted friend. Even if he didn’t always show it, there was a gentle and caring side to this man. May we all remember Steve and think of him with a smile in our hearts as we recall his quick wit, sarcastic humor, his big laugh and those bright blue eyes! Whatever memories you made with Steve, cherish them and know he loved us and is resting peacefully watching over each one of us. Steve, you will be deeply missed by your family, friends and all who knew you.
~ As Steve was known to say “It was a great ride” ~ Until we meet again, Rest in Peace.
