Tom retired from Newport News Shipbuilding in 2009. Better known as “Mack” to his fellow workers, he was a fixture in the machine shops during his 48 years of distinguished service. He served in numerous positions from machinist to supervisor to Apprentice Instructor, eventually earning the title of “Master Shipbuilder”, his proudest career achievement.
But a career in the Shipyard was not enough for Tom; he also devoted himself to the service of his country and his fellow citizens. He was a member of the United States Army Reserve, a Scoutmaster, a counselor with Contact Peninsula, and a Red Cross Disaster Team worker.
Tom was an active member of Bethany United Methodist Church, serving in various roles and positions including President of the United Methodist Men and Lay Speaker.
He was preceded in rest by his wife of 40 years, Marion Cosby MacLeod.
Tom is survived by his loving family including two sons; Richard Duffey of Hampton, VA and Mike Duffey of Montpelier, VA; a daughter-in-law, Sheri Duffey; two brothers, Frank Taylor of Orange Park, FL and Ken Taylor of Lexington, SC; two sisters, Laura Dales of Green Cove Springs FL and Annie Hawthorne of Middleburg, FL; two aunts, Tillie Cunningham of Middleburg, FL, and Virginia Gornto, of Tennessee; an uncle, Andy Bredon, of Buckeye, AZ; four grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
