Devoted family man and Veteran
On the 17th of July 1962, Nilo Pesa Moreno was born in Samar Leyte, Philippines to Francisca Moreno and Fermin Moreno. At 57 years of age, Nilo stepped peacefully into eternity on Sunday, the 8th of September 2019 at Memorial Medical Center in Modesto, California due to health complications.
Nilo graduated from T. Paez high school in the year of 1978 in Manila, Philippines. He received his Associate’s Degree in Criminology in 2014 at West Hills Community College in Lemoore, California.
In 1984 when the U.S. Naval base in Subic Bay, Philippines was still located there, Nilo joined the U.S. Navy in hopes to make a better life for himself and to help his family. Nilo proudly served in the U.S. Navy for 20 years as a Culinary Specialist formerly known as Mess Management Specialist. He enjoyed traveling and had been to several places such as Abu Dhabi, Singapore, Thailand, Canada, Alaska, and Hong Kong while in the service. Nilo had served on the USS Ford, USS Ranger, USS Independence, and USS Blue Ridge. In 1993 to 2002, Nilo was stationed at Yokosuka Naval Base in Japan for nine years. Nilo eventually retired with honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy as an E-6 on June 2004 in Lemoore, California. After Nilo retired from the Navy, he briefly worked at the Tulare Probation Department as a Cook Specialist. Later on, he worked at Coalinga State Hospital as a Cook Supervisor for seven years. Finally, he was employed in Jefferson Charter Academy in Hanford in the food services department for three and a half years.
Nilo was a religious man following the ways of the Roman Catholic Church. He was affiliated with Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Hanford, California, and attended church regularly on Sundays. Nilo was a part of the Masonic organization in Okinawa, Japan.
Nilo loved to go out for coffee with his close friends who were also in the service. He loved to take trips with his family and make lasting memories with them. Nilo loved being around his two grandchildren and loved to spoil them any chance he could get. His favorite pastime was watching The Filipino Channel (TFC) and singing karaoke to his heart’s content. Some of his favorite songs were classics by Engelbert Humperdinck, Tom Jones, and Frank Sinatra.
Nilo Moreno married Marfran Yap Moreno in January 3, 1987. They met at Continental jewelry store that Marfran at that time currently worked at in Long Beach, California. Nilo and Marfran enjoyed 32 beautiful years together. They have three children, Katryna Love Alvarez, Kathlyn Joy Moreno, and Danmar Joseph Moreno. Nilo has two grandchildren, Rayden Alvarez and Natalie Alvarez, and a son-in-law, John Alvarez.
Nilo is survived by his older brother, Ernesto Moreno and his wife Virginia Moreno; and his niece Ervillaine Moreno and his nephew Jesse Moreno. Nilo’s great niece Alyssa Moreno, and great nephews, Shan Cedano Moreno, Yohan Moreno, Arkin C. Moreno, and EJ Moreno.
