Bruce Richard MacDonald, 58, of Hanover passed away peacefully and surrounded by his loving family on October 5th, 2021, after a courageous, decade long battle with cancer. He was the son of Bruce B. MacDonald and Nancy Lee Patterson of Hanover, brother to LeeAnn, Scott, and many other foster brothers and sisters that he welcomed with open arms. Bruce was the devoted husband of Beth Ann MacDonald, and loving father of Gregory, Andrew, Jeffrey and Caroline. He also had three nephews, Sam, Joe, and Tyler as well as five nieces, Laura and both Katies and Lisas that he loved and cared for like his own children. Bruce graduated from Northeastern University in 1986 with a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering and rose from a Northeastern co-op and to Vice President of the LTX corporation as an accomplished engineer and executive.
Bruce poured himself into his wife through her own journey with cancer and made it his life mission to ensure that she received the most cutting edge and effective care available. He was a stoic gentleman, extremely hard working, and dedicated to his family and friends. Bruce instilled a sense of good nature and charity to his children and led by example. After losing his mother at a young age and his wife much too soon, he continued to personify strength and generosity in honor of their sacrifice. To many, Bruce was a thoughtful, caring and generous, and a mentor to even more. He tediously researched topics surrounding both Beth’s and his own illnesses and committed his life towards advancing treatment trials, challenging doctors and clinicians and passing his research on to others in need. Even further, Bruce was an active member of many charitable organizations and always stood for what was right even from thousands of miles away.
Bruce was an avid Boston sports fan and relished the moments spent with his kids during the recent successes of our teams after prior heartbreak, especially after having game 6 of the 86’ World Series on in the back room of Beth and Bruce’s wedding night. He loved traveling with his family every summer between South Carolina and Smugglers Notch in Vermont and those memories will always be ingrained into the family and friends that were brought along. Bruce enjoyed dancing with Beth to their favorite songs, playing sports with his children and participating in all of their activities throughout each busy schedule. He raised three sons to be Eagle Scouts, pushed each through a college education and pushed everyone he knew to be the best version of themselves. His infectious laughter, which often brought him and others to tears, always brightened the room and warmed our hearts. Bruce will be deeply missed throughout all the lives that he has touched.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Nancy Lee Patterson/Beth Macdonald Memorial Scholarship fund at Northeastern University or to the Cancer Research Institute, for research on treatments for LeiomyoSarcoma.
Funeral services are to be held at First Congregational Church of Hanover, 17 Silver Street, on Saturday October, 16th 2021 at 11am with a reception at Riley Hall to follow.
