

Miss Helen C. McGovern, 91 a lifelong resident of Abington died Friday, September 29, 2006 in the Pope Nursing Home in Weymouth. Daughter of the late Felix and Julia Driscoll McGovern, she was born in North Abington on January 4, 1915. Miss McGovern was a 1932 graduate of Abington High School and received a Bachelors degree in Education from Bridgewater Teacher's College in 1936. She later earned her Masters degree in Education from the same college. She began her Teaching Career in Abington, where she taught for 8 years at the Dunbar Street Center School and 1 year at the North School. In 1945, she accepted an appointment in the Weymouth School system, where she served as a Teacher, Cadet Teacher, Principal of the Athens School, Director of Instruction and Assistant Superintendent of Schools until her Retirement in 1978 after 42 years in Education. As Assistant Superintendent, she participated in establishing Kindergartens and Libraries in all of the Elementary Schools and in developing a program for academically talented students. During her retirement she served on the Abington Board of Library Trustees for 12 years, 10 of those years as Secretary of the Board. She also volunteered at Flu clinics. She was a member of the Norfolk County Teachers Association, the Retired Educators Association of Massachusetts, the Friends of the Library and the Abington Senior Citizens. She is survived by 2 nephews, John P. McGovern and his wife, Martha of Bridgewater and Richard J. McGovern and his wife, Colleen of Billerica and 2 nieces, Judith M. Williams and her husband, Brian of Hingham and Mary K. Moscato and her husband, Richard of Wakefield. She was the sister of the late John F. McGovern and the late Mary J. McGovern. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, October 4, 2006 at 10:30 AM in St. Bridget Church, 455 Plymouth Street, Rte.58 in Abington. Interment in St. Patrick Cemetery in Rockland. Visitation in the Sullivan Funeral Home, 45 East Water Street in ROCKLAND on Wednesday morning from 9-10 AM. Memorial donations may be made to the Abington Senior Citizens.
