

He grew up in Hanover, MA, and was a graduate of Hanover High School (1947) and Suffolk University Law School. While attending law school at night, Joseph worked for the FBI in Boston, where he met Mary Ann Barca. They married on June 8, 1957 and soon after settled in Maryland, where they raised their family and Joseph established his career as a federal criminal investigator. After 25 years in Maryland, Joseph and Mary Ann returned to Hanover. They eventually moved to Linden Ponds in Hingham, where they enjoyed the last 20 years making many new friends.
Joseph was a man of strong faith and he was proud of serving in the Navy as a submariner on the U.S.S. Diablo during the Korean War. A talented musician, he played the saxophone, clarinet, and flute throughout his life. At age 90, Joseph decided to learn how to speak Spanish, and he did. He enjoyed gardening, reading and spending summers at his cottage on East Sandwich Beach. Above all, he loved spending time with his family.
Joseph is survived by Mary Ann Roche, his wife of 66 years. His children Rosemary (Roche) Dodds and her husband Alan of Maryland, Caroline (Roche) Dynan and her husband Larry of Hanover, Joseph A. Roche and his wife Dana of Bellingham, and Annette (Roche) Tallarida and her husband Jon of Hingham. His grandchildren Christopher Dodds, Marianne Eggerl, Monica Bianco, Bill Dynan, Lisa Dynan, Joseph Roche, Thomas Roche, Luke Tallarida and Sean Tallarida. His eight great-grandchildren and his sister, Eleanor Nawazelski.
Visiting hours will be held on Monday, September 25th from 4:00PM-6:00PM at Sullivan Funeral Home in Hanover - 551 Washington St., Rt. 53. A funeral mass will take place at 9am on Tuesday, September 26th at Our Lady of the Angels Parish - St. Mary's Church in Hanover - 392 Hanover St. Burial will immediately follow at Hanover Center Cemetery.
