Mary-Ellen was raised in Norwell and attended Hanover High School. She met the love of her life, John David MacMillan, and married in 1956. The two then settled in Halifax to raise their family. Mary-Ellen worked as an administrative assistant at Pembroke Hospital for many years. She took pride in her work.
Mary-Ellen was a quiet and observant woman with a wry sense of humor. She was never one to hold back from making a “smart” comment, one of which would make all in the room laugh. She was overly generous and kind with a one-of-a-kind smile accompanied by sky blue eyes that lit up a room; though, on the other hand, she was incredibly strong, stubborn and fiercely independent. She always put others before herself, without a second thought. It was not but a week or two before her passing that she realized she was, in fact, “old”. Her spirit was, and will always remain, young. She loved to cook and bake; her spaghetti sauce, potato salad, turkey gravy and dolly bars will be missed by her family, all in their own way. Mary-Ellen sincerely enjoyed hosting events for her friends and family. She spent her spare time traveling, gardening, knitting and crocheting. Above all, her favorite thing was spending time with her children and grandchildren. Her family was of the utmost importance to her, her “everything”, and this could not be mistaken by anyone. She never missed a family event or milestone, big or small. Her family will cherish and hold dear these memories and their quality time that was spent with her. Mary-Ellen will be sorely missed, though lovingly celebrated by all.
Mary-Ellen was the loving wife of the late John David MacMillan. Mother of the late Dawn Arnstein and her husband James of Georgia and Laurie Benson and her husband Michael of Rockland. Grandmother of Zachary Benson and his wife Erin of Georgia, Taylor Benson of Plymouth, Leah Benson of Rockland, and Daniel Arnstein of Georgia. Sister of the late Charles, Patricia, James, Sandra, Guy, and Donald of Florida. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Services for Mary-Ellen will be held privately by the family.
