Ruth was born and grew up in Boston, the second daughter of Frank and Onorina Giancola, with sisters Helen and Elaine.
Ruth went to Boston University and graduated with a degree in Journalism. Her studies helped lead to her strong independent streak – with women’s rights always at the forefront of her thinking. In her career as an educator and school administrator at high schools and business and career colleges, she mentored many a young woman and left her mark in the world.
During a summer break from university, to get out and see the world she took a job waiting tables at Lake Minnewaska in upstate NY. She would go out with friends downtown to meet the locals. And there a handsome, young gentleman began flirting with her. Eugene Van Wagner became the love of her life. They were married in 1950, and they were blessed with 3 children, 6 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren in their over 50 years of marriage before he was taken too soon.
Ruth truly adored her family, who all called her “Grams.” After retirement, Ruth and Eugene spent years traveling back and forth across the country living a bicoastal existence to be sure they could spend as much time as possible with them.
After her husband died, Ruth did not slow down. She continued to spend winters in California and summers in Massachusetts, building new friendships and having more adventures, including traveling to Italy and China in her eighties.
Ruth was preceded in death by her husband Eugene and her sister Helen. She is survived by her children Lynne Noll & husband Brad, Jill Case, and Nial Van Wagner & wife Diane; her grandchildren Jessica Stebbins & husband Geoff, Karl Noll, Jared Case, Aaron Case, Laura Van Wagner, and Nikki Van Wagner & husband Alex Vrhel; her great-grandchildren Charlie and Dexter Stebbins; her sister Elaine Yasi & husband Dan; and a large extended family that will keep her legacy alive.
