

He was born in Rockingham County on November 25, 1940 and was the son of the late Howard R. and Eunice Violet Shifflett Breeden.
Charles graduated from Montevideo High School and was employed in maintenance with Bridgewater Home and Hampton Inn before retiring. He was a member of Free Will Baptist Church in Harrisonburg and attended Bridgewater Baptist Church.
Charles served in the US Navy from 1960 until 1970 and traveled to 28 different countries. He was on the USS Holder that boarded the Russian Frigate during the Cuban Missile Crisis and he did a tour in Vietnam and escorted Navy Seals up the Saigon River.
On December 12, 1990 he married Reta Herring Breeden, who survives.
He is also survived by sons, Howard R. “Chip” Breeden, III, of Penn Laird and Charles W. “Chuck” Breeden, IV, of Harrisonburg; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; step-children, who he loved as his own, Norman R. Argabright, Jr. and Michelle Crawford both of Harrisonburg; two sisters, Jane Elizabeth Caricofe of Elkton and Martha Ann Seward of Dayton; numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Howard “Butch” Breeden, Jr.
A memorial service will be held this evening (Monday, September 26, 2016) 7:00 pm, at Free Will Baptist Church, 331 Vine St., Harrisonburg, with Pastor Paul Collins and Pastor Roger Austin officiating.
