Dear Mamerta,
     A friend from Farmington has just sent me word about Doctor's passing. Jack and I are so very sorry.  He was such a special person, so gentle and warm.  I will always think of him and his kindness to my mother, and how we laughed together because we both had Micheles.
     Then when I was able to count you both as friends, it was always so much fun to have you both walk through the door of the shop.  I've missed you both and thought about you so often.  Please know that you and the family are in our thoughts and prayers.  I'll always remember you both with much love and affection.

Thank you everyone who has and will continue to write about my father.

Below is the eulogy from Mass on Monday, May 8.

Good morning, brothers and sisters, for you all our family to us.   I am Roland Santos, and we celebrate my father's life.
 
My father would always say: "Things done well are worth while doing."  My father was a restless spirit.  As a young child of 5 years old, one morning in 1944, at his village in the Philippines, he was sleeping on the back of his favorite water buffalo when he was awaken by a buzz.  He looked up into the sky and saw a great aerial dogfight between blue planes with stars and white planes with red spots.  He cheered by standing up and jumping on the back of his beloved water buffalo.  The gentle beast took no heed of this minor irritation.  This was father's first introduction to Americans, to him, then and ever after, the great Olympian people from the sky.  Little did he know that his family line would be all restless Americans.
 
After the war, he and his brothers and sisters made shoes late into the night in war-torn Manila just to put food on the table.  Grandmother sequestered parachutes left by the US Army and made them into clothes.  For the next two years, my father did everything possible to tear apart the indestructible parachute clothes so that he could wear something else besides white.  
 
Papa was not a good student in school, and it appeared that he was destined to play dice and fight fellow spirits with his chums. All of a sudden, my aunt, his older sister, dropped out of medical school because of illness.  Since my grandparents already paid for the tuition, the university allowed my father to take her place.  Knowing Papa, all of the neighbors chuckled under their breaths.  
 
Papa did the one thing that would change his life forever.  He asked God's for help. Fervently.  Like the garden of Gethsemane.   In return, he promised to devote his life to God's will.
 
He barely passed medical school, but pass he did, and marched in the graduation ceremony, to the astonishment and pride of my grandparents.  He gained an internship to study in the US, well on his way to fulfill his dream to be an eye doctor, since he marveled at any optical equipment.  
 
God rewarded Papa for his obedience.  His greatest reward was that he met Mama.  But, isn't it true that God often seems to weave blessings with conditions?  Mama was no easy catch, and she expressed a preference for a surgeon husband, as many of her cousins, my uncles, were on their way to becoming marvelous surgeons.  However, they were also marvelous students.  They were first in their class.  Papa did not have these gifts.
 
No, Papa's gift was that he saw God's will in Mama's preference.  Dad knew that Mom was a kindred religious spirit.   Papa banished all optical ambitions and entered surgical training.  Like a fish in water, his dexterity necessary for making shoes made him excel in surgery.  
 
I will not recount Papa's incredible professional achievements to you.  Papa was a very humble man and he would not want me to do so.  He knew that all that he had was from God.  This humility bred in him a gentle and self-deprecating sense of humor, the kind of wonderful humor that offends no one.  I will say that while practicing 20 years in Missouri, my father became known as a master surgeon.  He has saved many more lives than the people in this room. He did so with coolness and precision.  He did so with lightening quick judgment.  He did so as the tool of the Lord. He quietly prayed every day and every evening, for help, and for thanks.  In the end, saving lives, giving people a second chance to redeem and reform, as an answer to their prayers, was what God wanted him to do.
 
As you can see, serving God, serving Mama, serving Gerard, Patrick, Michele and me, and serving YOU were one and the same duty to Papa.  His clarity of mind and purpose made him no great thinker.  My family will not reflect upon our immense grief at his loss.  This would quickly evolve into a recitation of our tender moments and lead to a jubilee that would easily exceed the 5 minutes that Father Silvio has earnestly requested that I limit my eulogy to, for your sake.    
 
No, instead, look at my father's life, my brothers and sisters, and remember three things:   Ask God, Serve God, Trust God.  The eternal happiness that Papa now enjoys will be yours too. Things done well are worth while doing.   This is Papa's final gift to you:  An example of A Life well done and Worth While having done.  Lastly, remember that all is possible with God.  After all, didn't my father show us that grades aren't everything?

Dear Mamerta and family, 
   So very sorry to hear this news...   Our love, thoughts and prayers are with you during this time... 
Dr. Santo's was a gentleman who just simply made the world a better place, always there for anyone who needed him... he touched the hearts of many throughout his lifetime simply by appreciating the goodness in others  
He fulfilled his ministry well of being a loving husband, an awesome dad, a good friend and most of all, being 
a faithful child of God!   
Although you will miss him tremendously, may your hearts feel peace knowing that he is now seeing the face of God... and hearing the words,
 "Well done, my good and faithful servant!"

Dear Mrs. Santos
 My wife and I are so sorry for you and the entire family at the loss  of Dr. Dom as I called him. I met Dr. Dom when he did surgery on my mother and  many years at the Farm Bureau gas station. Then some time later he performed surgery on my wife. I have asked Roland about how you and Dr. Dom were doing. Our Thoughts and Prayers are with all of you!

Dear "Babe,"  So sad to hear of hour sweet  husband's passing.  He seemed so well when we met at the P.E.O. "BIL" dinner this past spring.
