Doris R. Hunter, age 90, passed peacefully away on Thursday, April 30, 2020. Doris was a loving and devoted wife and mother who enjoyed time with friends, feeding her family, and traveling with her much adored, late husband of 55 years, James R. Hunter. She was a compassionate listener and a “make do” child of the depression. She loved to laugh. She sold vegetables from her father’s garden as a child. She was a trusted employee of the Jervis B. Webb Co., Sears and Roebuck, and Solaronics. Doris was a life-long and faith-filled member of Gethsemane Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod. She graduated from Lutheran High School in Detroit. Doris was born on September 14, 1929, in Detroit, Michigan. The daughter of the late Walter H. Rokash, and Olive Stern Rokash. Doris was the sister of the late Wesley Rokash and is survived by sisters Janice Grant, of Anaheim Calf., and Rhoda Madaj of Lupton Mi. Doris resided in Pontiac Mi., and then was a longtime resident of Rochester Hills Mi. where she raised her family. She made a recent transition to Harrisonburg, Va to live near her daughter. As a mother, she gave her children “roots to grow and wings to fly.” Doris is survived by her beloved children: James W. Hunter and his companion Debra Embert, David B. Hunter, and Cindy A. Hunter and her husband Samuel V. Nickels. She was the doting grandmother to James T. Hunter and his wife Sofia, Melanie A. Hunter, and Amanda J. Werb and her husband Michael Werb, Heather D. Hunter-Nickels, and her partner Sean Cassidy, Alexander L. Hunter-Nickels, and Ana L. Hunter-Nickels. Doris was beloved by her great-grandchildren: Jocelyn and James A. Hunter and Logan J. Werb. She was a well-loved aunt to her many nieces and nephews. Doris was a longtime friend to the Nancy and Gerald Mahrle family, the late Pat and Ed Abentrod, and their family. Doris was a well-liked and respected neighbor. In her later years Doris, and her family, were very appreciative of the care that she received from Jan Adams and Lisa Russell. Doris will be missed by everybody that knew her.
