I am late, but better late than not at all. I just found this obituary while looking for Mr. Turner. HE WAS MY COUNSELOR AND HELPER AT PMHS IN 1958 AND HELPED ME OBTAIN EMPLOYMENT WITH THE VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT OF HIGHWAYS IN LOCATION AND DESIGN before I graduated in June of '58. He was a fine man and I have greatly missed him over the years. I shall always love him and I will pray for his surviving family as long as I live.  BE EVER MORE GREATLY BLESSED!!!

My dad Joe Shackelford and your dad were Silver Beach buddies when they were teenagers and worked at a local grading shed. Your dad and mom were one reason I felt at home at Madison being so far away from the Eastern Shore.  When my dad was at RMH the last months of his life in 2001, it meant a lot to have Francis visit him. They reminisced about old times in Exmore and Silver Beach. My memories of your dad were that he was always so kind and such a gentleman. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. Jane Shackelford Smith

Dear JT, Patrick and Family,

My wife Ka(Karen Toothman) and I send our condolences to you in this time of remembrances.  I grew up in Buena Vista in the 1950s and '60s.  I came to Bridgewater college in 1964, spent a few years in northern Va. and have been in the area since 1973.  I taught and coached track at Montevideo and Spotswood HS and retired 8 years ago.  My wife, Ka, while a  student at Madison College, kept you guys a few times.

Of course I remember your Father vividly.  He was well loved and respected the years he spent in BV as a counselor and principal.  I got reacquainted with him as he moved to this area and served as admissions director at JMU.  He and Charlie Kurtz and Francis Turner were three gentlemen who worked diligently to get me into college.  They and other educators in BV made the difference in my life.  Success in life depended on men like your Father who looked at education more than merely a job.

Missing him I trust can be softened by the good he gave to others.

I was very sorry to hear about Uncle Francis' passing. Mom had told me that he had been ill for some time, but it's good that he passed peacefully and that you all could be by his side.
