

One of four sisters, Mae was born October 17, 1925 in Montgomery County, Virginia to Walter and Lucille Swaim Williams.
She spent the early years of her life in the Alberene area of Albemarle County where she completed her elementary education in the one room school at Alberene and high school education at Scottsville High School. She also attended Mary Washington College.
She is survived by her husband of 66 years, W. Henry Smith. Also surviving are her daughters Susan Houston and her husband, Douglas, of New Kent, and Patricia Watson and her husband, James, of Massanutten. She has two granddaughters. Sally is a principal of D.C. Prep in Washington, D.C., and Katie is a R.N. at VCU Health System.
Mae was a gifted homemaker, an accomplished painter, and a charter member of the Wayland Women’s Club. She enjoyed bridge and with her husband restored a 19th Century mountain log home in the Beldor Hollow area of Elkton.
The family will receive friends 6-8:00 pm, Wednesday, September 4, 2013 at Lindsey Funeral Home in Harrisonburg.
A funeral service will be held 11:00 am, Thursday, September 5, at the funeral home, with Rev. Bob Talbott officiating. A graveside service will follow at 2:00 pm at the Riverview Cemetery in Charlottesville.
