8 febrero , 195023 mayo , 2021

Mary Ellen Houser Kyger of Rockingham, formerly of Shenandoah, loving mother, grandmother, colleague, and friend, passed away at her home on Sunday, May 23, 2021.

Mary was born on February 8, 1950 in Luray and was the daughter of the late Edward Page and Lucille Virginia Dovel Houser.

On June 28, 1969, she married Warren Garfield Kyger, Jr., who departed this life on May 21, 1997.

Mary is survived by a daughter, Susan Kyger Kile of Rockingham; son-in-law, James; three grandchildren, William Garrett, Bryant Gage, and Genna Paige; and a brother, Lynn Page Houser of Stanley.

A 1968 graduate of Page County High School, Mary entered the nursing profession after graduating from the RMH School of Nursing in 1971. For nearly 43 years, she proudly, compassionately, and fiercely served humanity as a registered nurse in the Emergency Department and later in the Nursing Coordinator’s Office at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.

Mary had a natural gift for mentoring that was exemplified when she shared her experience and wisdom acquired over many years of nursing. As gratifying as she found her professional calling to be, her greatest joy came from her adored grandchildren and the treasured moments she spent with them. Mary’s legacy will live on forever in the hearts of those her care enriched.

Interment will be private, and a Celebration of Life gathering will be planned for a future date.

In lieu of flowers, her family welcomes contributions to the W. G. and Mary Kyger Memorial Scholarship, c/o Atlantic Union Bank, 440 South Main St, Harrisonburg, VA 22801. This annual scholarship will be awarded to a Page County High School senior who will be furthering their education in the health care field. Preference will be given to those pursuing a degree in nursing or fire/rescue.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Lindsey-Kyger Funeral Home in Shenandoah and condolences and memories may be shared by visiting

I knew Mary as Nursing Coordinator. She was the rock that had our backs, knew how to handle all situations, perform all nursing procedures, all with competence, humor, and a no nonsense manner. She was a wonderful mentor and made us better nurses. She will continue to influence the care of so many patients and families through the many nurses that she inspired.

I worked with Mary for many years and was honored to do so. Her knowledge and experience was a tremendous resource, and she was a great sounding-board when another opinion or idea was needed. First as a co-worker, and then as a friend, I enjoyed her sense of humor- we often shared a silly joke or snarky comment to break tension in almost overwhelming circumstances. Thankyou for your years of service to the community, now it's your turn to rest. My heart, thoughts and prayers go out to your family and loved ones in their time of sorrow. May God grant them peace.

Mary Kyger exemplified old-school nursing through her dedication, work ethic, and compassion. Even when in physical pain, she gave her all to the task at hand without complaint. She was a joy to work with. I will never forget her. May she Rest In Peace. My condolences to her family.

What a lovely human being Mary was—she was always a calm and steady force and wealth of knowledge within the nursing staff at RMH—I worked there for many years—she was a Nurse Coordinator when I knew her—she was a no nonsense, down-to-earth comrade to all of the nurses—she was competent and kind—wonderful to patients—just knowing she was there made my shifts lighter. Funny, honest, tough, compassionate—how she will be missed by many—I am praying for her daughter, brother, grandchildren—her whole family—we know she is looking over you as she did while here—that was her way—may you feel God’s peace knowing she is in His presence.

Susan and family,
I started at RMH in my early 20's and Mary was one of the first true mentors I had though she worked in a different department. I interacted with her and the other ER nurses for years, and when she and certain others were on duty, you knew it would be smooth sailing no matter what came through the ambulance bay or those sliding doors. She ran a tight ship and earned everyone's respect. She set the standard and helped maintain the community hospital vision.
I'm so sorry. God's peace and strength to you during this time.

Wonderful memories will be held close to my heart of visits with WG and Mary at local gun shops with jokes being told! Then to working side by side over the years with Mary at the hospital! Both wonderful people and will be missed greatly! Continued hugs and prayers for all of you ❤️
