Alan spent his early years in a small town in northeastern Arkansas. His father was the owner of Cox Lumber Company. Growing up, Alan learned about custom cabinetry and furniture making, a skill-turned hobby that he carried with him throughout his life. He made boxes, he made bookshelves; nothing was too big or too small that he could not craft into something special to fill his home.
He started dating his wife of 56 years while they were in high school. She was a country girl and he, the “city” boy. His dad tried to dissuade this longer distance romance. Gravel roads were tough on a car, he reasoned. This parental advice went unheeded, and they were married in December,1969.
Alan professed his faith in Jesus as his savior in August, 1959 at First Baptist Church, Piggott, Arkansas. He served as their youth director during the summer of his college years, and he served various churches as pianist, organist, Bible study teacher, choir member, and deacon. His strong faith guided his life.
Alan was organized and meticulous, proving a natural fit for a distinguished military career. After graduating from the University of Arkansas in 1971 with a degree in chemistry, he devoted twenty years of his life serving his country as an officer in the Air Force with duty stations both home and abroad, too numerous to count. Following his Air Force retirement, he was an environmental chemist with SWEPCO.
A consistent theme of his life was his passion for all things Razorback. From the legendary 1969 Great Shootout, numerous Cotton Bowl appearances, and a few trips to College World Series for the diamond Hogs in Omaha, he could call the hogs from rote memory.
He survived by his wife, Bonnie Alexander Cox, his daughter, Larissa Cox and her wife Charity, Kevin Cox and his wife Crystal. His grandchildren are Ethan and Elliot Hansford and Audrey and Reece Denham. He is also survived by his sister, Judy Cox Philips and husband Michael.
Preceding him in death are his parents, Dorris Edward Cox and Camilla Nadine Bricker Cox, and his sister, Carol Ann Cox.
Serving as ushers will be Randy Boyett, Steve Gore, Wade Rasberry, Steve Robinson, and Warren Windham.
