John honorably served his country with 20 years in the United States Air Force, followed by 20 years of dedicated service with the United States Postal Office. He also served his community as a member of the Posse with the Bossier Parish Sheriff’s Office. A man of deep faith, John was a faithful deacon and devoted member of Barksdale Baptist Church for 54 years.
He had a deep love for the simple joys of life—fishing, family fish fries, and cheering on LSU, especially when playing against Arkansas. He cherished time spent playing dominoes with family and could often be found tinkering and puttering in the yard or around the church. Known for his gift of fixing just about anything, he was always ready to lend a hand. Most of all, John never missed an opportunity to talk about his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, whose love he shared freely and lived out daily.
John survived by his beloved wife of 69 years, Elaine Jones; children, Sharon J. Wisniewski (Ronald), Darla J. Whiddon (Guy), Adina J. Cubley; grandchildren, Jonathan Wisniewski (Erin), Justin Wisniewski (Jackie), Marissa Kees (Bobby), Garrett Cubley (Amber), McKenna Cubley; great grandchildren, Mia Rose and Max Wisniewski, Noa Grace Wisniewski, Roman and Aaliyah Kees, Colton, Chandler, and Cooper Cubley.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Homer and Catherine Long.
Pallbearers will be Ronald Wisniewski, Guy Whiddon, Jonathan Wisniewski, Justin Wisniewski, Bobby Kees, and Garrett Cubley. Honorary pallbearers are the Deacons from Barksdale Baptist Church.
A visitation for John will be held Saturday, August 30, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Hill Crest Memorial Chapel, 601 Hwy 80, Haughton, Louisiana 71037. A celebration of life will follow at 11:00 AM with Calvin Hubbard officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Northwest Louisiana Veterans Home or Barksdale Baptist Church.
The family would like to extend special thanks Christus Hospice and Staff of Wing three at Northwest Louisiana Veterans Home.
