Kenneth Byron Lane transitioned to his new home in heaven in the early morning hours on Monday, June 24, 2019. Ken’s story began February 26, 1954. He was the oldest son to Ruben Byron Lane and Dorothy Agnes Tedder Lane. He was born in Prentiss, Mississippi while his dad was still serving in Korea. Soon after Ruben returned to the family, they moved to Caldwell Parish, and it was there where they made their home for many years. Ken was a good son and a good older brother to Terry Lane, 3 years younger. They lived much of their life in Grayson, Louisiana and he graduated from Caldwell Parish High School in 1972, a proud member of the 1972 Spartan State Championship Baseball Team.
Following high school, Ken attended Northeast Louisiana University and earned a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice. During college, he fell in love with Teresa Ann Mercer, who he affectionately called TAM until the day he died. She was the love of his life. They married in 1976 in Grayson Baptist Church and later built a family. Christopher Byron Lane was born June 19, 1982 and Curt Cameron Lane was born April 4, 1989. Ken and Teresa instilled in the boys the importance of faith, honor, integrity, loyalty, respect, and overall good character. These boys would grow to be good men. Both are proudly serving and succeeding with careers in the US Army. Ken couldn’t have been prouder of those boys. They’ve become wonderful men and wonderful husbands to Shannon Carter Lane (Chris) and Francine Vasquez Lane (Curt).
Ken’s greatest treasures were his 3 grandchildren, Isabella Myree Lane, Carter Byron Lane, and James Marshall Lane. It would be impossible to say how much he loved them. Suffice it to say, they were his pride and joy! Nothing and no one could make him smile like those kids.
Ken had a full career working for the Louisiana Department of Public Safety, Weights and Standards Division. He retired after 30+ years. Ken was also a Mason, member of Columbia Lodge Number 164. He was raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason in 1981. Post retirement, he and Teresa made their home in Haughton, La.
Love and laughter didn’t end with Ken’s death. There will be many stories told and his grandchildren will carry out his legacy of love and honor for family. It has been said that “wherever a beautiful soul has been, there is a trail of beautiful memories”.
There will be a memorial service for Ken at 3 o’clock pm on Saturday, June 29, 2019, at Grayson Baptist Church in Grayson, Louisiana. The family will receive visitors beginning at 1pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family is recommending donations to TAPS (the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors). This program offers compassionate care to those grieving the loss of a military loved one.
