

Mildred Wakefield, 93, passed away on January 10th, 2025 in Asheville, North Carolina. Mildred was born in Cleveland, Tennessee on October 29th, 1931 to parents, Jess Stone and Lillian Bryant Stone. Shortly after she was born, her parents and brother Jack moved to New Mexico. Mildred grew up in the Pecos Valley of Fort Sumner, New Mexico. She was an excellent student and was valedictorian of her graduating class. After High School Mildred moved to Lubbock, Texas where she met and married her future husband of 62 years, Louis Wakefield. This began her journey as an Air Force wife. Mildred lived in many locations, with Dreux, France being her favorite.
In 1965 Mildred moved to Clovis, New Mexico, and worked at Cannon Air Force Base Hospital. She was also a member of Central Baptist Church. In 1979 she moved to Bossier City, Louisiana where she worked at Barksdale Air Force Base Hospital until her retirement in 1998. She and Louis were both members of the First Baptist Church of Bossier, where she was a member of Diamond Set. Mildred was an excellent seamstress and cook and also enjoyed knitting and crocheting. She was also a Breast Cancer survivor. What Mildred loved most was her grandchildren and would travel to see them whether it be in the states or overseas.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, James Stone. She was also preceded in death by her husband Louis in 2014.
She is survived by her sons Gary (Sherry) Wakefield of Henderson, Texas; Bobby (Suzanne) Wakefield of Arden, NC and daughter Sheila (Derrick) Morgan of Virginia Beach, VA. She is also survived by her brother Jack Stone of Ardmore, OK and her sister Evelyn Nutt of Tyler, Texas. Mildred had six grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. After Louis’s death in 2014, Mildred moved to North Carolina, where she spent her remaining years.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 pm, Tuesday January 21, 2025 at Hill Crest Memorial Funeral Home in Haughton, LA with burial following. Family will be receiving friends beginning at 1:00 pm, prior to service.
