Robert Francis Goodwin, or Bob to the people who knew him best, left this world on October 21, 2019 in Shreveport, Louisiana. He was born in Longview, Washington on April 17, 1949 to Charles and Stella Goodwin. He graduated from Goldendale High School in 1967. He then joined the United States Army where he first served in Vietnam. He decided to continue his career in the military and retired after 20 years of service. He then continued to support our military by working as a government contractor at Fort Campbell, Kentucky until he retired.
If you truly knew Bob, you know that he loved God and he loved people. He didn’t ever meet a stranger. He enjoyed hunting, camping, and fishing, especially with his best friend Bryan Shrum, who we lost last year. He also enjoyed building and flying RC airplanes and was a member of a local group in Clarksville, Tennessee. He really enjoyed working with his hands and building things. He collected movies and especially enjoyed the Marvel movies. He also loved to listen to music, it didn’t matter the genre or year. He just loved life and made the best of living it.
Bob was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in March 2019. He didn’t let the diagnosis get him down though. He wanted to fight it. He moved to Haughton, Louisiana so that his youngest daughter could help care for him. But he surprised her and her husband by being strong and independent, only accepting help when absolutely necessary. It wasn’t until September 2019, that his lungs started giving him more problems and took his strength away. His lungs were what ultimately took him away from us. He died comfortably and surrounded by his daughter and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Charles Goodwin and Stella Mabe; his sister, Linda Taft; and his best friend, Bryan Shrum.
He is survived by his children, Brett Goodwin, Cheryl Goodwin, and Darlene “Kimmie” Dorrell and her husband, Kirk Dorrell; his grandchildren, Allyah Rex, Elizabeth Cole, Marquis Childers, Travis Childers, and Makayla Childers; his adopted son and daughter and her children, Josh and Anna Holman, Douglas and Amber; his brothers Larry and Garry Goodwin; and his adopted family, Joanne Shrum and her children Christine and Tim Adkins, and Nicole Shrum.
