December 25, 1932 – June 18, 2025
With heavy hearts and deep sorrow, we announce the passing and celebrate the life of our beloved sister, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Barbara Sandra Torby, who left us peacefully on June 18, 2025, at the age of 92½.
Barbara was the heart of our family—a woman of immense strength, quiet grace, and an unwavering love that carried us all through life’s joys and challenges. Her presence was a guiding light, her wisdom a steady compass, and her love a constant comfort.
She was a devoted and selfless mother to Halette Sharkey, Rachelle Svalestad, and Janice Friedman, and a loving big sister to Lawrence Slavin. Her family was her world, and she poured her love into her seven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren, each one a source of immense pride and joy. She was their biggest supporter who was always by their side cheering them on, from sporting events, graduations, weddings and births. Her legacy lives on in them—in their hearts, their memories, and the countless ways they were shaped by her love.
Born in the Bronx, NY on December 25, 1932 to Mollie Feldman and Robert Slavin, Barbara brought warmth, wit, and wonder into every room she entered. At just sixteen, she met the love of her life, Selwyn Torby, and they were married on January 10, 1954. Together, they built a life rich in laughter, compassion, and unwavering devotion. Though she lost Selwyn far too soon, she carried his memory in her heart every single day, faithfully waiting to be with him again and ensuring his memory and legacy was a constant presence for her grandchildren.
Barbara was a gifted educator and a lifelong learner. As a science teacher for over 35 years, she nurtured not only minds, but also spirits. Her involvement in student government, and her beloved annual reading of The Giving Tree, left lasting impressions on generations of students who were lucky enough to be in her classroom.
She was also an artist of warmth, stitching love into every handmade sweater and blanket she knit for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her creations were more than just handmade pieces—they were expressions of care, tradition, and connection.
Barbara found peace and happiness by the ocean. She and Selwyn created countless cherished memories with their family at their Ocean Isle Beach condo, where the sounds of the waves echoed their laughter and love. The beach remained her sanctuary and a place where she felt connected to her family.
A woman of remarkable independence and spirit, Barbara lived life on her own terms and was unapologetically herself. The recent purple streak in her hair was more than just a style—it was a symbol of her vibrant individuality, unshakable self-confidence and sense of humor.
Even in her final months at The Residence in Connecticut, Barbara left a lasting impact. Though her time there was brief, her warmth, wit, and genuine kindness were felt by all who crossed her path.
As we mourn her loss, we also celebrate a life so beautifully lived. She touched so many hearts and shaped so many lives. Her voice, her laughter, and her love will forever echo in our memories. She was fortunate enough to witness all seven of her grandchildren marry and welcome children of their own into our family.
“I heard it said that people come into our lives for a reason, bringing something we must learn. But I know I’m who I am today because I knew you.”
Barbara will be deeply missed and forever cherished by all who knew her. We find comfort in knowing she is now reunited with her beloved Selwyn, and we can only imagine the joy and celebration of their long-awaited reunion.
In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations are made to the American Cancer Society in the name of Barbara and Selwyn Torby.
A private interment attended by the family only will take place immediately following the Chapel Service.
