To David Finn's Family:

I worked closely with David in the 90s when he was on the board of the Academy of American Poets and I was executive director.  David's degree of engagement and support for our work, and especially his help in all of our efforts to improved the Academy's public relations and printed materials, was extraordinary.  He was a great board member during a transformative time for the organization.

But I got to know David even better in the years immediately following my departure from the Academy in 2001.  David invited me to events at the UN, met with me at his office on several occasions to offer his guidance and help in my next career steps, and even offered me my own temporary office at Ruder Finn (an offer I regret not having accepted if only because it would have given me the opportunity to get to know David better).  I felt blessed by his caring, his wisdom, his perceptiveness, and his generosity of spirit at a crucial turning point in my life.  Genius in essence is energy combined with vision, and David's genius was simply unbounded.  He was both a brilliant artist and  a brilliant businessman, and a transformative supporter of good causes and organizations.  He was an ethical hero whose commitment to doing the right thing, to making the world a better place, was uncompromising -- and he was also just a great guy, with a big heart and a wonderful twinkle in his eye.    I'm very sorry I will not be in town and will be unable to attend the graveside service, but please consider me to be there in spirit, to offer my condolences, to honor David, and to say thank you.  I will never forget his kindness to me, and like so many others, I will never forget him.
