Philip Rosen, of New Rochelle, NY passed away on Sunday, January 19, 2014. He is survived by his beloved wife Rita of 66 years, his loving children Phyllis Hadley and Michael Rosen, his sons-in-law Robert Landes and Richard Hadley, his daughter-in-law Stephanie Rosen, and his adoring grandchildren; Brett Raskin, Shaun Raskin-Deutschlander, Weston Deutschlander, Matthew Landes, Alexandra Landes, Jacqueline Landes, Alec Rosen, Kayla Rosen and Sierra Rosen. Sadly, Philip was predeceased by his daughter Wendy Landes on March 14, 2013. Born in the Bronx, on September 1, 1921, to Isadore and Anna Rosen, Philip was an outstanding student which enabled him to gain entrance into the Townsend Harris High School. He won a Merit Scholarship for mathematics and was admitted to Cornell University where he graduated in 1942 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering and a letter in Varsity Crew. Immediately after graduation he worked as an engineer for Stone and Webster while working for the United States government on "The Manhattan Project." During World War II he served his country as a Lieutenant in the United States Navy. After the War, Philip joined his father's masonry contracting business, Isadore Rosen and Sons, constructing many buildings throughout the metropolitan area. In addition to providing masonry services for other developers, Isadore Rosen and Sons went on to develop and build numerous buildings on their own behalf. Although success in business was very important to Philip, the idea of "giving back" and social responsibility were paramount. He felt fortunate to be able to contribute much time and energy to the many causes he believed in. Philip was a benefactor of Technion in Israel, a founder of The Chemotherapy Foundation, a benefactor of New Rochelle Hospital, The Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, and the Anti-Defamation League of B'Nai Brith. He was active in UJA, Federation of Jewish Philanthropies, and United Way. He was an honorary trustee of Temple Israel of New Rochelle, on the Board of Trustees of the Jewish Braille Institute (JBI), and was the founding member of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine's Young Men's Division. Philip and Rita were honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award, in 2004 and Philip remained a "Life Overseer" on The Board of Overseers of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Philip was a man of many hobbies. He loved literature and art, collecting stamps and shells but most of all he loved to ski. He skied well into his 80's and passed on that love to all of his children and grandchildren. Philip had a tremendous zest for life and felt he truly got the opportunity to live his American dream. He was loved by many and will be missed. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, January 22, 2014 at 11:30am at Temple Israel of New Rochelle, 1000 Pinebrook Boulevard, New Rochelle, NY. Donations in Philip's memory should be made to "The Wendy Walk" (www.wendywalk.com) or to the Albert Einstein College of Medicine Men's Division.
