MAY 21st, 1952 – JUNE 4th, 2023
Robert L Reiter passed away on June 4, 2023, in Billings Montana. From the streets of Stuyvesant Town on the Lower East Side of New York City to the spaces of the wide-open American West, Robert touched many on his path.
In his youth, Robert attended PS 19 and Jr HS 104. He loved roller hockey, baseball, bowling and NY Rangers games. His family moved to Mount Vernon NY where he played high school football. He attended the University or Albuquerque and American University before SUNY Alfred where he realized his love of horses. He attended and graduated from Montana State University in Bozeman, MT, with a BS in Animal Science. He was a cowboy at heart. He frequently rode his horse “Raven” the 8 miles to school from his cabin in Bear Canyon. At MSU, he was a saddle-bronc rider on the rodeo team and attended and instructed at the new Farrier’s program. He took these horse-shoeing skills to the famous Spendthrift Farms in Lexington, KY, and then other horse farms in different states.
Robert then moved into business. He worked in Portsmouth VA at a textile factory working in logistics before moving to New York City where he became a licensed stock and bond trader. He met his love Susan (Mishkin), on a city bus. They moved to Miami and started a publishing business. First a regional golf course guide and, once his son Andrew was born, a parenting journal. He became a realtor and sold high-end real estate in the South Florida area, often spending summer vacations in villas and castles in Europe. But he always dreamed of returning to Montana.
Robert moved to Missoula, Montana. He enjoyed golf, fishing, cars, hot springs, live and electronic music, good food, cigars, horses, and camping. He recently decided to escape the winter cold and spent three months in Arizona.
He wanted to be remembered as a cowboy businessman.
Robert is survived by his son, Andrew Reiter, his brother Barry Reiter (Barbara) and many friends.
A private memorial service will be held graveside at Mt Hebron Cemetery in Queens NY at 11AM on Wednesday June 14.
He always ended his phone calls with a prayer for peace. Please take a moment and join him in his prayer.
SHIVA will be on Wednesday June 14th and Thursday June 15th from 4pm to 7pm at the home of:
