

Edmund Powell was born on February 20, 1928 in Superior, Nebraska to parents Ralph and Elizabeth Powell. He had 2 brothers and 4 sisters. At the age of 3, his family moved to Beatrice. He attended Beatrice Central grade school, Beatrice Jr. High school and graduated from Beatrice Senior High School in 1946. Ed liked sports and played on Beatrice Sr. High’s football, basketball, track and the Championship winning golf team.
After graduating High School in 1946, he joined the US Army for an 18 month enlistment. Basic training at Fort Lewis in Washington State. He shipped out from Seattle to Japan and spent a little more than a year in the Army Corp of engineers. After discharge in 1948, he spent a short period in Beatrice working at Nat’l Bank and then went to college at Indiana Technical Institute in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He received his B.S. in Electrical Engineering in 1951. He then took a position with Northrop Corp., working with designs on Snark Missile and support equipment. After about 3 years, he moved to the Firestone Company to work on The Corporal Missile and a number of proposals. In 1960, he returned to Northrop where he worked on many programs and proposals including the Peace Keeper Missile.
In 1951 he married Junella Hormann and raised 3 daughters Diane, Nancy and Sondra. In 1978, they were separated and later divorced.
During this second stint at Northrop, he met Duska Morrow who became his second wife. Retirement for both came early in 1989 when they left the LA area for Hemet, California. They became members of Soboba Country Club. They both relished golf at Soboba and were members until 2010. Ed served on the Board of Directors for 15 of the 21 years at that venue. In 2010, they moved to Seven Hills and joined the golf club (until the club folded in 2018) and Seven Hills golf men’s club. He also belonged to the American Legion Post #858 in San Jacinto.
Ed is survived by wife Duska, daughters Diane and Nancy, sisters Marjorie and Norma and 6 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by daughter Sondra, brothers Jack and Ralph, and sisters Marguariete and Eleanore.
Interment will be private at Riverside National Cemetery.
