James was born to Alvia and Hazel Cox on December 25th, 1937, in Missouri. Later the family moved to the small town of Barstow California. During his high school years, James played football and received a college scholarship. After graduating from high school, he took a different path and enlisted in the Marines. While starting his military career, James married and became a father to Steven, Eryn, Douglas, and Robert. James spent more than 20 years actively serving. After retirement, James went back to school with a focus on business management and worked in the sporting industry for many years. He participated in large fishing tournaments known as Bisbee’s Black and Blue. Dedicated to his passion, James traveled to Cabo San Lucas every October to support these tournaments.
When James met the love of his life, Carol, the pair were inseparable. For more than 30 years, James served as devoted husband and stepfather. His stepchildren called him “Dad” and James modeled that perfectly. James and Carol loved adventuring together. They even owned businesses including a gift shop and tea house. Their family business included purchase of a 1904 Victorian home which they lovingly restored. Their children and spouses worked at the tea house, which gained popularity through event hosting. At the age of 72, James and his wife and sold their Orange, California-based business to enjoy their official retirement.
James lived life his way. Through life’s challenges, he remained positive and steadfast, a rock for his family and an inspiration to friends and those he met.
A memorial service is scheduled for July 8th, 2022, 9:45am at the Riverside National Cemetery to honor James and his military career.
