

James Edward “Jimmy” Fowlkes was born to Paul Fowlkes Sr. and the late Annie Fowlkes, on July 29, 1949, in Columbus, Ohio. At the age of two, Mr. and Mrs. Fowlkes relocated with James and his older brother Richard “Ricky” to Los Angeles, where he would remain throughout childhood into adulthood. James graduated from Los Angeles High School in 1970, and went on later to receive a certification in the Culinary Arts from the Watts Skills Center in 1973. He married Doris Jean Shavers on January 1, 1983 and they lived together in the greater Los Angeles area before relocating to San Jacinto, California in 2004.
James served as an Area Plant Manager for the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) for 22 years until he retired in 1999. He was an excellent cook and often made delicious meals for his family, friends, and loved ones. He faithfully tuned into the Word channel on DirecTV every Thursday night at 9pm to watch Bishop Huie Rogers. He was an avid lover of the Motown Sound and developed his own style through the likes of his beloved Temptations, Four Tops, and the Isley Brother just to name a few. His love of music was always used to entertain his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
James leaves to cherish his memories a loving and devoted wife of 32 years Doris J. Fowlkes of San Jacinto, California, one child Felicia A. Fowlkes of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, three stepchildren, Darlene Cohen of Hemet, California, and Tinya M. Barney of Buena Park, California. One daughter in-law- Meltonya Barney of Los Angeles, CA. One sister –in-law Valerie ( James) Jackson of Lancaster, CA, and three brother-in-laws James (Jeanette)
Carter of Oakland, CA, Lawrence Washington of Little Rock, Arkansas, and LeVon Carter of Victorville, CA. He’s also survived by 12 grandchildren Marquita L. Barney, Deron L. Barney Jr., Ben Burton, Brandon Burton, Renita Mitchell, Brent Mitchell, Brittany Mitchell, Lamburgenie Hannah, Devon Barney, Deon Lamont Barney, and DeAnthony Lamar Barney. Two extended Kenyada Williams, and Kendra Williams. Eight great-grandchildren, Tony Savage, Celeste Savage, Paradise Savage, Khadir Savage, Angel Barney, Aniyah Barney, Amira Mitchell, and Zaiya Motley. He is preceded in death by his his beloved Mother, Annie “Momsy” Fowlkes, 2 brothers Richard “Rickey” Phillips, Paul Fowlkes, Jr., mother in-law Viola Washington, and stepson Deron Lee “Ronnie” Barney . A host of other nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
The family will receive friends from 4:00PM to 8:00PM on Monday, October 22, 2012, at McWane Family Funeral Home, 350 N. San Jacinto Ave., Hemet, CA. Funeral service will be held at 1: 00 PM on October 23, 2012 at McWane Family Funeral Home.
