At Redlands Community Hospital at 1:15 A.M.
At age 95.
Richard Harthun was born in
Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1926.
Adopted at 3 months of age and raised by adoring parents,
(late) Emil A. and Lillian A. Harthun, as an only child.
Richard was a celebrated WW2 veteran.
Enlisting in the Army Air Force in 1943 at age 17.
He was awarded the Phillipine Liberation Ribbon with a bronze star,
and the Air Force Air Medal with 2 Oak Leaf clusters. He served in
the Bismarck Archipelago Sea Battles and flew missions to New
Guinea, Chine, Burma, India, Taiwan and Japan; and served on an
observer mission to see the first atomic bomb dropped on Japan on
August 6, 1945 at Hiroshima.
Then being honorably discharged as Staff Sergeant, January 26, 1946
just weeks before his 20th birthday.
He went on to Graduate University of Wisconsin, Whitewater in 1952,
and taught at many High Schools in Illinois and California.
He further became a very successful Prudential Insurance Agent that
spanned over 30 years with numerous accolades including National
sales achievements many years before retiring. In addition to Richard
serving his local community by serving on the board of directors of the
Sun City Civic Association, he was loved by many of his daily business
contacts and neighbors for being funny, stubborn, a story teller, very
organized, determined to always be his very best, a published writer
and a character who really resisted giving up running his own errands
or just going for a ride around the neighborhood, (blindly) in his trusty
golf cart.
