Virginia M. Mitchell, age 98, of Hemet, CA, passed away on Sunday, August 23, 2015 at her home. Born on July 24, 1917 in St. Joseph, MO, she was the daughter of the late Franklin Linnius Doughty and the late Ida Omo Doughty.
A goal oriented and intelligent woman, Virginia earned a Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry - a rare feat for women of her time. She took that knowledge and helped others as a teacher, and in the nursing profession for over 20 years. Virginia led a simple, but extraordinary life in many ways.
Two of Virginia’s passions were church and volunteer work. She combined them in helping to put together food packages at her church for needy families. Already in her 90’s Virginia delighted in going to the Church’s Food Pantry early every Tuesday morning for several years to help gather the ingredients for the packages that would be handed out that morning. She also was involved in an English mentoring program for several years, helping young students who were struggling with the English language become more proficient in it. As with everything she did, she did not want any accolades or even acknowledgement for her work. She chose to do things for the good of others and her faith!
Virginia's greatest legacy was her family. She was preceded in passing by her husband, Kenneth B. Mitchell, in 1995 and is survived by her daughter, Linda K. Wilson of Big Bear City, CA; son, Stephen L. Mitchell of Hemet, CA; grandchildren, Diane Hull, Linda Wilson, Brenda Pullen, Alice Wilson, Milo Whitson, Carrie Stephenson, Crystal Mitchell, Robert Zeidler III, Eric Mitchell, Katie Zeidler, and Shanna Mitchell; twenty great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
