

John Henry Filler, 86, a loving husband, father, son, grandpa, PaPa, and friend; passed away peacefully at home on July 5, 2018 surrounded by family. John was born on July 25, 1931 in Cumberland, Maryland to Owen Huff Filler and Marguerite Crosby Filler. He was raised and graduated high school in Erie, Pennsylvania.
John attended Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio then moved to Glendora, California. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War as a Medic on the USS George Crymer, a destroyer ship. John received his Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of California Los Angeles. He worked at Merck, Sharp and Dome for 35 years. At retirement, he was a District Manager and well respected by his peers.
John married the love of his life, best friend, and soul mate, Barbara Mae Watson on July 11, 1958. Together they raised three wonderful children: “Johnny O”, “Dee Dee”, and “Cherie Lee” in Northridge, California. His job took his family to Salt Lake City, Utah for nine years. He, Barb and the girls moved back to sunny California and lived in Mission Viejo, California for 30 years; last residing in Lake Las Vegas, Henderson, Nevada.
John’s hobbies included, working out at the gym, golf, skiing, reading and traveling with Barb while enjoying life.
John was proceeded in death by his parents and his only sister, Wanda. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Barbara; children: Johnny O. (April) Filler of Utah, Diane Filler-Petersen of Missouri, and
Cherie (John) Maietta, of Nevada; grandchildren: Chauncey (Lacey), Channing and Morghan Filler, Hallie (Jimmie) Petersen-Stokes, Katie and Cassadie Petersen; and great grandchildren: Caysen, Beckam, Swazey and Heston.
As a family we would like to thank friends, neighbors, and especially the care givers for their kind and loving support. They gave John, who always asked, "How do I look?", the dignity and respect he so well deserved, along with homemade chocolate cookies upon request. He will be deeply, missed, never forgotten and always in our hearts. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to a Veterans organization, kind words to another, or a hug to someone in need.
A family service will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, August 24, 2018 at Palm Boulder Highway Mortuary, 800 South Boulder Highway, Henderson, Nevada 89015. Following the service he will be laid to rest at the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Boulder City, Nevada.
