John Elmo Jacobson passed away peacefully on July 12, 2025, in Las Vegas, Nevada, at the age of 90. A beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, his life was a testament of resilience, faith, and love for his family. He always expressed his love for his family and friends and had a gift of making them feel special.
He was born on December 7, 1934, to Carlos Nels Jacobson and Mabel Elizabeth Houghton in Santaquin, Utah. On March 7, 1973, he married the love of his life, Shirley Jean Chamberlin, and they were later sealed in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the St. George, Utah Temple. They were married for 52 devoted years, weathering together the storms of life. They created an eternal legacy of love and commitment to each other. John is preceded in death by a beloved daughter, Lillian Elizabeth, his parents, and 6 siblings.
John served faithfully in his church callings and dearly loved serving as a ward and stake missionary. He enjoyed spending time in his garage, hanging out with friends when they came to visit, and collecting model cars, trucks, tractors, and airplanes. Family would always take home a new treasure from his collection. He made friends easily and loved meeting with them at the local Eagles Club.
Born during the Great Depression, John’s humble origin and formative years taught him the value of a strong work ethic. These principles were woven into the fabric of his character. He built a successful plumbing business and worked at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas, Nevada to provide for his family. John often helped those who could not afford to pay him. He truly had a tender heart for those in need.
John’s legacy lives on and is survived by his wife, Shirley, and children: daughters: Christine (Duece) Holliman, Susan (Loren) Hansen, Sherie (Gaylen) Briggs, and Brenda (Ric) Miller; sons: Randy (Deanna) O’Hara and Robert (Kathy) O’Hara. He was a beloved grandfather to 28 grandchildren and 56 great-grandchildren.
