MARIKA CORONEOS, 90, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family in Henderson, Nevada, on Wednesday, April 25, 2017. A Henderson resident of 58 years, Marika was born in Damonia, Greece on July 16, 1926, to parents George and Elayne Katrakis. She met her husband, Paul, while he was staying with family in Greece. In 1959, they were married in Athens and settled in Henderson, where Paul and his family lived. Marika and Paul raised three children: Elayne, Lorraine, and Nick. Marika worked hard to quickly learn to read, write, speak English, and become a United States citizen. Marika and her family have been longtime members of the St. John’s Greek Orthodox Church community. She volunteered for the Greek Food Festival for many years. She enjoyed cooking, especially traditional Greek food and pastries. No one ever left her home hungry. Marika loved working in her herb and flower garden. For many years, she was referred to as “the lady with all the hollyhocks.” She was a passionate sports fan, but especially couldn’t be bothered when the World Series or the Olympics were on. Marika was a devoted wife, mother, and yiayia (grandmother). Marika was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Paul; daughter, Lorraine; son, Nick; and six siblings. She is survived by daughter, Elayne Coroneos; son-in-law Ron Smerek; and grandchildren, Jimmy Smerek, Marissa Smerek, Derek Siano, and Ryan Siano, all of Henderson. Services will be held at 4:00pm (visitation from 3:00-5:00) on Thursday, May 4th at Palm Mortuary-Henderson, and Funeral at 10:00am on Friday, May 5th at St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church.
