A Sailor Died Today. Note-Revised Quote.
He was getting older and his hair was falling fast.And he sat around on weekend, telling stories of the past.Of the places he had traveled to and the deeds that he had done.In his exploits with his shipmates, they were heroes,everyone! And to listen to his neighbors,his tales were but a joke. but his shipmates,they all nodded, for they knew whereof he spoke,But we'll hear his tales no longer, for our Mike has passed away, And the world's a little poorer,for a Sailor Died Today. Upon retirement from the Navy, he worked hard for his keep, and he worked awhile at trucking, on many days a week. His wife and kids were even more important then had been the Navy blue. He was not exactly ornery, but he did most things his way; So the world will hardly notice that A Sailor Died Today. Now he will be mourned by many, and a few that knew him best, and he wonders if they will miss him as he takes his final rest.When politicians leave this earth, their bodies lay in state.While thousands note their passing and proclaim that they were great. Papers tell of their life story from the time that they were young. But the passing of a sailor goes unnoticed and unsung. If we cannot do him honor while he's here to hear the praise'Then at least lets give him homage at the ending of his days. Perhaps a simple notice in the paper that might say:"Be silent for a moment, please: A SAILOR DIED TODAY"

Fair winds my friend. I'm sure the good Lord has his honor guard piping you aboard his ship to heaven just as you have led our USS Perry Reunion Honor Guards and presided over our Memorial Services. 'You may be gone but never forgotten'.

I will always remember Mike in full dress reading the folding of the flag ceremonial for my wife.May he rest in peace.

Mary and family: I am truly broken hearted over the loss of Big Mike. I know how much he wanted to be with his friends and shipmates in Jacksonville this October. I prayed hard that he might be given one more USS Perry Reunion. But it wasn't to be. I know he'll be with us in Jax nonetheless....his powerful spirit present with us all and especially with Mary and his family. He will be sorely missed. May he rest in eternal peace.

As one of the crew of the USS Perry it is with great sorrow when I heard of Michael's passing. He was loved by all of us and will be greatly missed at our reunions. To his wife and family we send our prayers. He will live on in our memories and we were blessed to have had him in our life.

Mary:  So saddened to hear of Mike's passing.  Although I was not privileged to know Mike as long as Dave, Ski and the Magnificent Seven, I was very fond of him in the short time I knew him.  Mike had a special way of entering a room and bringing sunshine with him.  The USS Perry reunions won't be the same without his presence.
