Betty Matthews

BETTY MATTHEWS NEWTON-Betty Matthews, 85 of Newton went home to be with her Lord on July 17, 2016 at Catawba Valley Medical Center. Born on October 6, 1930 in Catawba County, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Elsie Price Bollinger. Betty was a member of Augustana Lutheran Church and she retired from Southern Furniture in Conover. At one time she volunteered at Catawba Memorial Hospital and was a member of the Home Extension Club. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Verlie Matthews; brother, Clifton Bollinger; nephew, Terry Bollinger; and step-son, Stephen Matthews. Survivors include her daughter, Cynthia Christian of AZ; son, Donald Coulter and family of Hickory; step-son, David Matthews and wife Gail of Claremont; four grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Freida Matthews of Conover; brothers, Rowe Bollinger, Bobby Bollinger, Jimmy Bollinger; and number of nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Wednesday, July 20, 2016 at Augustana Lutheran Church at 1 PM with Pastor Gaven Mize officiating. Burial will follow at Catawba Memorial Park. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 12-1 PM at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Augustana Lutheran Church, 1523 16th Street SE, Hickory, NC 28602.
