...I do have "good" grief and joyful hope, and will see Dad again in heaven.  I miss my Dad very much.

I read the following at the 6-3-10 service celebrating Darvin's life:
   I am indeed thankful for the opportunity provided by Lorainne and other family members to have a part in honoring a man I’ve admired all of my life. Please know my heart as I do so.
   Until the last few years, when I thought of Darvin, I frequently found myself smiling, often unconsciously, realizing it only after the fact. After talking with Lorraine and Joyce, Tim, and Kevin over the last couple of days, I realized just how much sense that made. I was reminded of Darvin’s good nature, especially of his infectious laugh as mentioned by the pastor. Often when Darvin would start telling a good story, he would get so amused by it, he would begin to laugh, almost to the point of uncontrol and tears, and have difficulty finishing it. I bet lots of us missed the endings to lots of good stories. But we got something better than those endings. When I saw the smiling picture of Darvin chosen for the newspaper obituary, I said to myself, “THAT’S Darvin.”
   Darvin is something of a unique name. And Darvin was Darvin. Some people can be easily identified by a single name. When you say “Elvis,” noone asks “Elvis who?” When Darvin’s name has come up, I doubt if anyone ever said “Darvin who?” A lot of us grew up referring to older relatives by first names. Some people might find that disrespectful, but I can assure you there was never a hint of disrespect from any of us. So yes, he was my uncle, Darvin – as he was to several of us in this room, but he wasn’t “Uncle Darvin” at least not to me. He was “Darvin.” It didn’t occur to me until this week just how unique that name is. I don’t think I’ve ever known anyone else with the same first name. I’m certainly proud to have known one of the few and been a member of his family.
   One thing I liked, perhaps most, about Darvin is that he liked things I thought were “neat.” I have never otherwise seen so many different (and different kinds) of radios and telephones. What I like most, that Darvin also liked, is cars. Many of the stories recently recalled to me seem to have centered around cars.
   I told Joyce the other day that it’s funny the kinds of things one remembers, and one thing I particularly recall is a green 1963 (I think) Ford that was their family car for a while. What was unique about it was it’s the first car I ever saw with air conditioning. After he bought it new (one of the few new cars he ever bought), Darvin had an air conditioner put in. It was probably my first experience with air conditioning of any kind. In many ways, Darvin was ahead of his time.
   Darvin never strayed far from the farm – living directly between the house his parents lived in on one side, and his sister Nadine and Carl on the other. My family used to get milk, with thick cream floating on the top, from the farm. We called it “cow’s milk” which distinguished it from “store milk.” Last night Kevin was recalling Darvin playfully squirting milk, directly from the cow, to (or probably at) the cats who lived in the barn. There are other critter stories involving rabbits, horses, possums, a favored dog Sparky, and a story about chickens, foxes, and an outhouse I’m not supposed to tell.
   While Darvin was quite good-natured, you could sometimes easily tell when he didn’t like something. Tim recalls his dad was not pleased with a hot summer’s worth of spilled, and then spoiled, “cow’s milk” soaked up in the interior of a red Chevy II. Another car story.
   Other cars included a really cool old Mercedes that Darvin paid almost nothing for so he could “fix it up.” Tim and I used to sit in it and talk. Then, there’s the Triumph Spitfire about which Darvin would tell of the Las Vegas mob connections it once had. Kevin still has it. I assume he’s checked the trunk carefully. One of my favorite cars was the huge black and white 1958 Chevrolet Station Wagon. I shouldn’t say “huge.” It that wasn’t all that much larger than a tank. That car was for Joyce. Darvin could be a bit protective.
   Tim fondly remembered his bicycle trip with Joe to the outer banks. Darvin was going to go pick them up for the return trip. Darvin’s mother fell ill, so he set out a bit earlier than expected. He and Kevin drove through the night, and Darvin was getting sleepy and needed to stop and doze a bit. Darvin asked Kevin to stay awake. He didn’t. Kevin suddenly woke and, realizing they were no longer traveling on the highway, screamed, quickly waking Darvin. By then, both were wide awake. That seemed to be all the sleep he needed. Yet, another car story.
   Finally, it must be mentioned that Darvin was a proud veteran. His time served in Germany during the post-World War II rebuilding of Munich is indeed historic. This proud veteran marched home on the most fitting of all days.
   Memories will endure, legacies will continue - certainly the living legacies here. Also the cars, the radios, the telephones, and the unfinished cabinet Darvin and Mac were working on that Joyce assures me will remain unfinished. But Darvin does not remain unfinished. At last, in Christ, he is complete.

Joyce I am praying for you and your family during this time of loss.  I pray that you and your family find comfort in the memories that you share and know that he is in a much better place.

and laughter, he was part of the Centel "family" and he will be missed.

To the family of Darvin,
I worked in Hickory with Darvin for many many years and knew him to be an outstanding worker and an even better person. Darvin was always very thorough in his work and always so willing to help anyone with a problem. He was our "go to " guy on so many matters of material issues and we always knew he would find the best possible solution to our issues. You never had to ask him twice for anything you could depend on him with your life. My wife and I moved away from Hickory 14 years ago and currently live in Fayetteville, still working for the company, and we lost touch with so many former employees from Centel. It saddens us to see one of the very best pass away. We will always remember him and his contributions to the company . God rest his soul.  Pete and Jan  O'Toole

What I will remember most about Darvin is his laugh.  It was always a pleasure to watch him tell a funny story, because he would laugh so much he could hardly get the words out.  That laugh was contagious, and it was impossible not to catch it.  I'm so glad Tim has that same laugh.  It was always such a joy to see Darvin's inherent humor and enthusiasm for life.  He was truly one of the best men I have ever known.
