Ellen Elizabeth Lib "Lib" Poovey Hamby

Ellen Elizabeth “Lib” Poovey Hamby, 97, passed away December 11, 2012 at Lutheran Home West. Born August 18, 1915 in Catawba County, she was the daughter of the late Clarence Ray Poovey and Candace Huffman Poovey. Lib was a lifetime and the oldest member of Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Hickory where she served on the Hospitality committee for 12 years. She was a member of the Senior Citizens and the WELCA Circle. She was a volunteer for over 36 years at Catawba Memorial Hospital; she taught Bible School, and was previously a Cub Scout and Brownie leader.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Wade Hamby; sisters, Otelia Hand, and Thelma Bowman; and brother, Daniel Ray Poovey.

Mrs. Hamby is survived by sons, Patrick Hamby and wife Patricia, of Raleigh, NC, and Shay Hamby and wife Dianne, of Hickory; grandchildren, Matthew Hamby, Michelle Hamby, Michael Hamby and wife Martha, Derrick Hamby, Keith Wheeler, Jason Wheeler and Susan Wilkinson; and 14 great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, December 15, 2012 at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Hickory with Pastor Dave Keck and Vicar Katie Maul officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. – 10:45 a.m. prior to the service.
